What Your Job Will Be Like: Are you passionate about your work and willing to join a dynamic team that helps seek solutions to issues facing national security? We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking technologist in the areas of chemical analyses and analytical chemistry to help our technical staff design and accomplish scientific investigations of the geochemical environment and conditions of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), the world's only licensed and operating deep geological repository for the disposal of transuranic waste. On any given day, you may be called on to: + Set-up, perform, and monitor experiments + Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instrumentation as well as maintaining a safe environment + Qualify new instruments, develop maintenance logs, and monitor instrument performance + Prepare information for technical documents + Write and update laboratory standard procedures, safety documents, laboratory scientific notebooks, and log books + Maintain inventory of laboratory supplies This position requires the selected candidate to reside near, and to work in, Carlsbad, New Mexico. Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite at the Sandia Carlsbad location. Salary Range: $66,900 - $128,900 *Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential. Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor’s in a STEM field plus experience in a laboratory setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience + Evidence of the ability to write operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory procedures + Solid understanding of one or more standard laboratory instrumentation, such as: + Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) + Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-AES) + X-ray Diffraction (XRD) + Ion Chromatograph (IC) + Gas Chromatography (GC) + Total Organic Carbon analysis (TOC) + ASAP 2020 Surface Area and Porosity analysis + Scanning Electron Microscope and Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectrometer (SEM-EDS) + Mossbauer Spectrometer + Raman Spectrometer + Laser Diffraction Size Characterization + Dynamic Light Scattering Size Characterization (DLS) + Zeta potential analysis + Optical Interferometry + Thermogravimetric Analysis/Differential Scanning Calorimetry (TGA/DSC) + Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry (FTIR) + UV-Visible spectrometry (UV-VIS) + Gloveboxes + Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE L-Level Security Clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Bachelor’s in Chemistry, Biology, Geoscience, or closely related field (e.g., Chemical Engineering, Environmental Sciences, or Materials Science) + One or more years of laboratory work performed in R&D settings + Ability to perform work in a safe manner and follow standard operating procedures + Ability to work autonomously with minimal direction, as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team + Experience working within thorough QA/QC requirements + Experience working in the area of aqueous geochemistry + Previous experience using laboratory equipment and instrumentation for high ionic strength solutions + Proven expertise in coordinating the management of multiple, competing sample collection, analysis, and data entry projects + Proven excellence in the technical field, oral and written communication skills, and interpersonal skills including respectful collaboration and communication About Our Team: The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is the world's only licensed and operating deep geologic repository for the disposal of transuranic waste. WIPP is operated by Nuclear Waste Partnership, LLC, under contract to the Department of Energy's Carlsbad Field Office (CBFO). Sandia provides scientific advice to CBFO in many areas, including modifications to the repository's operating permits, periodic recertification of the repository, on-going monitoring of repository performance against regulatory requirements, and optimization of the national transuranic waste complex. The Repository Performance Department, part of Sandia's Defense Waste Management Programs Group, provides the experimental and fieldwork capability needed to assist CBFO in assuring continued and uninterrupted certification and permitting of WIPP. Position Information: This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
