What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Summer - R&D Undergraduate Intern to perform data analysis and develop analysis tools for chemical and biological detection applications. You will work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists to develop data analysis tools to understand relationships in experimental data from a variety of sensors under development and field deployed. On any given day, you may be called on to support Research & Development staff by: + Performing data collection and sensor calibration + Visualizing and preprocessing various types of sensor data including imaging, spectroscopic and ‘omics data + Implementing algorithms from published and prior work + Performing data analysis including feature selection, dimensionality reduction, etc. + Preparing results for presentation to the research team Qualifications We Require: You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements: + Currently attending and enrolled full time in the spring term immediately preceding the internship (or scheduled to graduate in the spring) in an accredited undergraduate program + Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major + Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0 + Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during the summer + U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S. Note: If you have not yet started your undergraduate program, please apply to a high school intern position. Qualifications We Desire: + Full-time undergraduate student pursuing a degree in computer science, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering or related STEM discipline + Desire to gain hands-on scientific research skills in the applications related to chemical and biological detection + Strong communication skills, written and oral + Demonstrated success working independently as well as part of a team + Proficiency in Matlab and Python programming languages + Experience with data analysis and/or signal processing + Experience with AI/ML methods Posting Duration: This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. About Our Team: The Biosciences and Chemical Defense Group, which is part of Sandia's Biological, Radiation and Signatures Science and Technology Center, supports mission areas in biodefense, emerging infectious disease, and biofuels. The Center performs exploratory science and develops technology to address pressing national needs in energy security, homeland security, and national defense. Security Clearance: This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance. Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
