Summary
The Department of Chemistry is seeking an Environmental Health/Safety Specialist (EHS) Associate to support the safe operation and functioning of one of the largest science teaching and research laboratory spaces in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. This position is responsible for providing environmental health and safety support for ~268,000 sq. ft. of assigned space in the Chemistry and Willard H. Dow Laboratory buildings.

Responsibilities*
Responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:


Assist Department members with regulatory compliance:

Manage and continue to develop the Vertere chemical tracking system, including daily operation maintenance; updating of the inventory additions and removals; and all re-inventory functions and reporting. Help develop custom and/or tailored reports and files. Work with EHS Manager to ensure facility regulatory compliance. Update the facility on current and new regulations. Help maintain facility SDSs. Assist with providing chemical storage and use information to the various University, governmental and emergency response agencies as needed.


Handle safety matters:


Assist in the investigation and reporting of safety incidents and injuries. Assist in identifying methods to prevent future incidents. Assist in coordinating routine safety inspections of the various research and teaching laboratories and the various instrument service and shop areas, to include write-ups of the safety inspections with recommendations regarding rectification for non-compliant areas. Help ensure that all safety devices (emergency eyewashes, fire extinguishers, etc.) are fully operational. Work with EHS Manager to ensure proper training is provided for all personnel so they are aware of all appropriate safety items (safety eyewear, safety shoes, specialty fire extinguishers, respirators, spill clean up kits, HF safety kits, etc.) that can be made available to members of the facility. Assist in the cleanup of small chemical spill cleanups and assist with lager spills as necessary. Assist EHS Manager in maintaining safety records. Assist the EHS Manager in providing information and support that includes safety training for all new graduate students, post docs, and faculty as required by federal regulations. Help to coordinate lab/office clean outs and recycle efforts: Assist with lab decommissioning and office moves. Coordinate all property disposition and equipment moves. Manage facility recycling initiatives.


General Facility Support:


Responsible for review and authorization of key requests for labs and offices. Responsible for reporting and tracking of minor building/facility repairs and maintenance issues. Handle waste disposal and/or loading dock duties in the absence of the Facilities Assistant or Waste Coordinator. Help hire, train and supervise student employees.


General Assistance:


Handle specific assignments as assigned by EHS Manager and/or the Laboratories & Facilities Director. Enter monthly Glass Shop and N2 billing information. Oversee the department Mailroom, U.S. Postal deliveries and departmental copier supplies and support. Work closely with the Safety and Environmental Health Officer, EHS, DPSS and the local police and fire departments as needed.


Professional Development/Certifications:


Attend conferences and seminars to continue to keep abreast of changes in rules and regulations within the safety and waste disposal community.

Required Qualifications*
Associates/Bachelors degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biochemistry or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience. 1-2 year's experience working in a chemical safety program. Experience using a chemical tracking system such as Vertere. Knowledge of modern occupational health, safety, and environmental, principles and practices, and applicable environmental rules/regulations. Strong interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to exercise diplomacy and work effectively with a diverse group of people. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Excellent computer skills (Microsoft Office/Google Suites).
