Job Description

Summary

The Pathology & Immunology department is seeking a Histology Technician III. Core duties will include embedding, microtomy, cryo-sectioning, routine and special staining, cover slipping, quality control procedures, quality control. The ideal candidate will have the ability to follow established procedures, identify issues, troubleshoot, escalate issues to management. The Histology Technician will maintain laboratory instrumentation with daily maintenance, order supplies and consumables and maintains inventory, and assist in training as assigned. They will also function at a maximum level efficiency with effective communication.

Job Duties

  •  
  • Performs core histology duties.
  • Embeds tissue with proper orientation in a timely manner while maintaining quality.  
  • Cuts tissue at appropriate thickness in a timely manner while maintaining quality.  
  • Embeds and cuts tissue on a cryostat.  
  • Obtains orders from LIS and e-mail and pulls appropriate blocks of tissue to cut slides for re-cuts and ancillary studies. 
  • Loads slides onto automated routine stainers and automated special stainers.  Coverslips slides using an automated coverslipper or manually as needed.
  • Performs quality control throughout all processes to ensure accuracy and that high-quality materials are produced.  
  • Ability to follow established procedures.
  • Follows established procedures at all times and does not deviate in an attempt to save time.
  • Ability to troubleshoot.
  • Ability to identify issues and troubleshoot by route cause analysis and create a plan of correction.  
  • Functions with efficiency and clear communication.
  • Ability to multitask without compromising quality or efficiency.  Must possess strong organizational skills in order to stay on task and meet deadlines. 
  • Clearly communicates verbally and written to management and coworkers when issues arise or when communicating information pertaining to shift handoff. 
     

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduate of a Histologic Technician AAS program, accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
  • Five years of experience in Histology.
  • Certified Histology Technician by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC).
     

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Histotechnology.
