What Your Job Will Be Like: We are seeking a Nuclear Engineer with subject matter expertise in the science, engineering, and programmatic execution of thermoelectric power sources. This includes understanding of overall architecture, sub-systems, and manufacturing of devices. This position will encompass a host of responsibilities and expectations. On any given day, you may: + Serve as the subject matter expert for a family of thermoelectric power source components covering 45 years of history up to the present day and beyond. + Be highly knowledgeable in the use of thermoelectric power sources across Sandia’s business areas, covering a wide scope of environments and conditions. + Work with next level assembly teams to ensure proper consideration of thermoelectric science and engineering requirements and constraints. Excellence in this role includes preventing issues by having an intimate knowledge of customer needs and component capabilities. + Serve as science and product realization SME for product realization teams, providing historical context, problem solving assistance, and mentorship to team leads and members. + Oversee or consult on research efforts for emerging thermoelectric technologies and other special topics. Especially includes projects that have cross-center teams. This role carries significant leadership and mentorship expectations. You will be expected to provide leadership for: + High consequence product realization problem-solving efforts + Vendor outreach and relationship management + System and subsystem customer coordination + Thermoelectric R&D, including low-TRL and technology maturation efforts + New employee mentorship and career planning. This role also requires a high degree of creativity, operational latitude, and sphere of influence. You will frequently: + Formulate and execute solutions to problems with minor management or stakeholder supervision. + Build teams, project plans, and reporting cadences from scratch when necessary. + Command the trust of leadership to collaborate and interact with all Sandia and National Security Enterprise staff, management, and executives without undue oversight. + Perform day-to-day activities without direct oversight or supervision, balanced by thoughtful reporting and consultation with management/SMEs when needed. + Maintain an extensive network across Sandia’s thermoelectric power stakeholders, and external to Sandia. (Existing network is strongly preferred). + Work to expand business areas and stakeholders and seek opportunities to propose power supply solutions where needed. + Collaborate with Mission customers, design agencies, and production agencies, overseeing coordinated efforts when high level coordination is necessary. + Leverage a demonstrated pattern of mentoring in science, program management, and general career development. + Serve as mentor and role model to employees across your local team and beyond, upholding good engineering judgement, safety security, and a commitment to the Mission. + Please note, reference letters attesting to candidate's qualifications for this posting will be required at time of application or shortly after. Qualifications We Require: + Bachelor's degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other relevant engineering or scientific field; or equivalent experience. + 12 or more years of relevant engineering or scientific experience. + 5 years of direct experience in product realization and/or R&D concerning nuclear deterrence. + Experience with thermoelectric science and engineering. + Active DOE Q level clearance Qualifications We Desire: + Master’s degree or higher in Nuclear Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics or other relevant engineering or scientific field; or equivalent experience. + Demonstrated written and oral communication with high level stakeholders, including high-stakes stakeholder relationships. + We also desire direct experience with: + Thermoelectric product development, technology maturation, and low-TRL R&D. + High efficiency thermoelectric designs and thermoelectric harvesting. + Thermoelectric device design, testing, and prototyping. + Sandia thermoelectric component history. + Additive manufacturing for high consequence applications. + Project ownership expertise, including new project scoping, staffing, funding, and reporting. About Our Team: Our team is part of the Power Sources Technology Group, working on high consequence technologies that support critical Nuclear Deterrence systems. We support the entire product life-cycle from development to production and legacy components. We also engage in R&D activities to develop power source solutions for the future. Security Clearance: Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD).
