Position Summary:

Provides accurate interpretation and translation of critical medical information in direct service to physicians and/or other health care providers who are seeing patients who cannot speak or understand English. The services of a health care interpreter enable clinicians to provide quality and safe medical services to LEP patients, furnishing accurate interpretations of symptoms, medical history, and healthcare terminology.

Under supervision from the Director of Health Care Service & Advance Care Planning and operational leadership from the Program Manager of Interpreter Services, provide English interpretations for Patients, Caregivers, Healthcare Providers, and Medical Center staff through in-person encounters. Contribute beyond specific job duties to ensure the smooth delivery of Interpreter Services at City of Hope.

These individual holds approved certification in one language that is not English and actively works within a multidisciplinary team to ensure optimal delivery of interpreter services. It is expected that the individual who holds this position can actively participate with colleagues in constructive problem-solving, program development and create and facilitate innovative and impactful services for patients, caregivers and staff.

The Department of Supportive Care Medicine and the Sheri & Les Biller Patient and Family Resource Center utilizes a staff leadership model. Every employee is expected to take a leadership role in the department. Staff will also be expected to actively participate in marketing, educational and group programs, program development and fundraising efforts, and outreach to patients, families, other City of Hope departments, and the community.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Provides timely, appropriate and respectful interpreter services to patients and families of the target language bridging the gap between healthcare providers and patients.
  • Precisely and accurately interprets critical medical advice and information given by the provider into equivalent terminology in the patient's native language.
  • Interprets with no additions or omissions.
  • Completion of daily activity logs and other documentation.
  • Proficient understanding of cultural sensitivity and ability to collaborate with people fromdiverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Maintaining fluency in the target language and current certification through completing necessary Continuing Education

Your qualifications should include:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.
  • 1 year of working as an interpreter in a medical/clinical setting
  • One of the following:
  1. Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI)
  2. Certified Healthcare Interpreter (CHI) certificate
  3. National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI)
  4. Certified Medical Interpreter, or equivalent certification

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $24.72 - $35.71 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
