Job Description

Summary

The Eye Bank Technician I is an integral position to the Lions Eye Bank.  The position works to procure tissue from local hospitals, morgues and funeral homes. The tissue is used in transplant surgery and/or research. The position evaluates corneal tissues and donor information to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.

 

The work schedule will be Sun, Thurs, Fri, 6 am - 6 pm; Mon 4 pm - 8 pm.

Job Duties

  • Recovers eye tissue from tissue donors for transplant or research purposes.
  • Performs and documents donor physical and ocular assessment.
  • Obtains blood specimens for serologic testing.
  • Performs internal processing of tissue on an as needed bases.
  • Requests and obtains medical records of donors.
  • Reviews potential donor medical and social history to determine whether the tissue is suitable for donation.
  • Delivers eye tissue to surgeons for transplant or research.
  • Answers and screens referral calls for eye donors.
  • Contacts families of qualified potential donors and obtains consent to donate eye tissue.
  • Enters referral data into database.
  • Maintains clean and safe laboratory environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • No experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College degree (either AA, BS or BA).
  • COA, COT or COMT certification through JCAHPO
  • 2 years working as an ophthalmic assistant or ophthalmic technician within an ophthalmology practice.
  • Experience in a tissue bank, funeral home or working with next of kin.
