What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Radiation Effects Experimentation Department is seeking a motivated Electromechanical Technologist to join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nation’s security. In this position, you will support radiation experiments being conducted at state-of-the-art facilities at Sandia National Laboratories (such as Sandia’s Z, HERMES, and Saturn pulse power machines as well as the Annular Core Research Reactor) and other laboratories throughout the United States. Your activities may range from supporting radiation effects research to qualifying the performance of electronic piece parts, subsystems, and systems to natural space-based and/or man-made radiation environments (e.g., environment produced by nuclear detonations). You will work in a collaborative environment with a diverse team and have access to some of the world’s most powerful tools.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Set up instrumentation, diagnostics, and test hardware in a lab or at a radiation facility and record data on measurement equipment.
  • Assemble electronic test boards, test cassettes, material samples, and/or hardware.
  • Do general lab work.
  • Prepare for, set up, and execute experiments at various radiation facilities.
  • Support logistics by assembling instrumentation and cabling as well as packing equipment for shipment.
  • Some travel will be required for project tests.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite

Qualifications We Require:

  • Bachelor’s or Associate degree in a relevant discipline OR 5 or more years’ experience as a technologist.
  • Laboratory and testing experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Radiation effects testing experience.
  • Willing to occasionally do center section work at the Z facility.
  • Experience with pulsed power (e.g., HERMES and Saturn) or reactor (e.g., ACRR) experiments.
  • Knowledge of diagnostic and data recording of high frequency signals.
  • Ability to assemble experimental hardware.
  • Experience with digital oscilloscopes and other electrical instrumentation (such as pulse/delay generators and power supplies).
  • Experience with operation, assembly, and design of vacuum/pressure systems.
  • Experience with lasers and/or fiber optics.
  • Ability to work independently and on teams.
  • Demonstrated computer skills/familiarity with MS Office programs and ability to write short reports.

About Our Team:

The main purpose of the Radiation Effects Experimentation Department is to assure and verify the capability of the nation’s nuclear stockpile to survive and operate through radiation and electromagnetic environments. These activities range from fundamental radiation effects research to qualifying the performance of electronic piece parts, subsystems, and systems to natural space-based and/or man-made radiation environments (e.g., environment produced by nuclear detonations). We accomplish our mission by performing basic and applied radiation effects research on materials and electronics through test and evaluation using state-of-the-art photon, ion, neutron, electron, and laser sources located at Sandia National Laboratories and other laboratories throughout the United States. We also develop critical radiation, electrical, and plasma diagnostics to characterize our test environments as well as perform simulations to investigate the radiation response of electronics and other test objects. An important activity in the Department is the design, measurement, analysis, and simulation of response data on surrogate test articles for the purpose of validating Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) computer codes that are (or will be) used to qualify future weapon and satellite electronic systems to various pulsed radiation environments and effects. Department personnel also provide guidance to electronic designers to assure proper design techniques related to mitigating the deleterious effects of radiation and qualification assessments of nuclear weapon hardware to each of Sandia's production groups. This team is part of the Radiation, Electrical and High Energy Density Science (REHEDS) Research Foundation at Sandia.

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs:

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information:

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

Essential Functions:

If offered the position, you may be required to demonstrate your fitness to perform certain physical aspects of the position, including lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling.
