What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a Year Round, R&D Graduate Student Intern.

An ideal candidate will utilize basic principles of physics and engineering to research marine hydrokinetic (MHK) devices; both Wave Energy Converters (WECs) and Current Energy Converters (CECs), such as tidal and river turbines, are currently studied at SNL. The major research areas we are currently involved in are: WEC design, modeling, testing and control, environmental assessment of large scale arrays (WECs and CECs), wave energy resource assessment, nearshore wave and circulation modeling improvements, the development of WEC power performance models, offshore wind platform development, and specialized component models (i.e. mooring, power take off, computational fluid dynamics, materials, etc.) for both WECs and CECs. Students with relevant experience in modeling and simulation or other renewable energy technologies will also be considered.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Work alongside team members including interns and senior engineers;
  • Conduct and validate computer simulations/modeling codes with field/experimental data
  • Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate partner

Qualifications We Require:

You bring the confidence and skills to be eligible for the job by meeting these minimum requirements:

  • Earned bachelor's degree
  • Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited science, engineering, or math graduate program
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
  • Ability to work up to 30 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
  • Ability to independently obtain authorization to work lawfully in the US for Sandia National Laboratories. Sandia will not sponsor work authorization for this position.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate school program full-time in the United States in a discipline that may include Math, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Naval Architecture or similar STEM program.
  • Have an interest in alternative energy and marine hydrokinetic devices specifically.
  • Flexible to take on new challenges in subsystem and system design.
  • Have experience in differentiable framework for multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO), differentiable numerical hydrodynamics methods and/or systems framework to assess economic, environmental and social impacts of wave energy.
  • Have experience with software that may include Matlab, Simulink, Python and/or Design packages including Solidworks or related packages and/or experience with Statistical modeling, Data Science at Scale and Mathematical Modeling.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

Sandia's Water Power Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of water power technologies. The primary focus area of the department's work is Marine Hydrokinetics (MHK) research with lower levels of effort in Offshore Wind (OW) and Hydropower. The department is responsible for all aspects of Marine Hydrokinetic device design, performance, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations for the Department of Energy's Wind and Water Power Technologies Office and in collaboration with industry partners. Offshore Wind Energy activities currently include Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) design and analysis and foundation scour. Hydropower efforts focus on seasonal simulation and optimization. Through partnerships with industry, academia, other National Labs, and public dissemination of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy security for the nation

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
