Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology consists of 13 full-time faculty members that includes some fixed-term faculty and one school administrator, 9 full-time Research Specialists, two full-time office Administrators, and fourteen graduate students. The department teaches Biochemistry to medical and dental students and provides instruction in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology to graduate students from multiple departments. A wide variety of specialized courses for graduate students are also taught. The educational objective of the department is to provide a sound basic foundation for students from various disciplines. The graduate program through the Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences with a Concentration in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is broadly based to prepare students for careers in academics, research, government, industry, and medicine.

In addition to their teaching duties, each of the faculty members has a research laboratory and is expected to perform research in his/her area of expertise. Faculty are expected to apply for grant support and to publish the results of their research in professional journals. The purpose of this organizational unit is two-fold; 1) to provide instruction and training for medical/graduate students and 2) to conduct biomedical research.
Job Duties
The Medical Research Scientist is critical to the successful operations of the Mass Spectrometry Core Facilities which provides both internal and external investigators access to advanced mass spectrometry technology on a fee-for-service basis. The Medical Research Scientist will be fully research-focused and will participate in multiple, simultaneous research projects. The position will be integral to providing vital proteomic, lipidomic, metabolomic, and quantitative mass spectrometry services for clients of the MS Core Facilities.

Client-Related Lab Activities (60%)
Provide sample preparation services for investigators using established protocols.
Acquire mass spectrometry data using sophisticated mass spectrometry instrumentation and established protocols.
Provide the Core Director and clients with preliminary analysis of mass spectrometry data.
Communicate project status updates to the Core Director in weekly meetings.
Train graduate students, faculty, and staff in sample preparation and data analysis.
Administrative Duties (25%)
Track samples throughout intake, processing, analytical, and post-analytical processes. This includes maintaining previously analyzed samples in case additional analyses are necessary and usage records of sample cohorts for billing purposes.
Implement and maintain laboratory safety plans, and consumable, and chemical inventories. Order chemicals and consumables as needed.
Assist the Core Director in the annual University Core Facility renewal process.
Work with the Core Director to develop new experimental designs, analytical methods, and data analysis workflows.
Instrument Maintenance (10%)
Maintain laboratory instrumentation and perform quality control checks on instrumentation. Contact contracted vendors for service and maintenance issues as needed.
Professional Growth and Continuing Education (5%)
Attend seminars, training, and development workshops to enhance knowledge and technical skills.

Contingent upon the availability of funds
Minimum Education/Experience
Master’s degree in physical science, life science, or medical science-related field, or a Bachelor’s degree in physical science, life science, or medical science-related field plus 3 years of laboratory research experience.
License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience with mass spectrometry, separations science (e.g. chromatography, analytical separations), or bioinformatics is desired.
