Position Description
The Department of Global Health and Social Medicine (DGHSM) at Harvard Medical School conducts research to constantly improve the practice of medicine, the delivery of treatment, and the development of health care policies locally and worldwide. Researchers at DGHSM have a long history of conducting research on tuberculosis, focusing on the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of both drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB.

The Research Assistant will be responsible for research support for the Beat-TB study. This study is funded by the NIAID and is implemented in close partnership with Socios en Salud (Partners in Health) in Lima, Peru. Our study proposes to investigate MTB genetic variants that contribute to clinical as distinct from microbiological responses to TB treatment and to determine whether specific mutations affect differential culturability. We’ve collected baseline and two-month follow-up data of 2000 participants.

The Research Assistant will work as part of a team comprising staff based in Boston and will perform data-management functions, including data quality control/assurance, producing datasets for analysis, conductive basic descriptive analyses, documenting data-related procedures, as well as data analyses in support of the work conducted by the PI and the Biostatistician.

Specific responsibilities include assembling and preparing data sets for analysis, conducting independent analyses in Stata or R and ensuring the software code developed is suitable for reuse by others, developing presentations on the results for internal and external audiences, contributing to reports and papers for publication, and participating in regular team meetings. The Research Assistant will also perform minimal data management tasks, such as annotation of the study’s data dictionary. Other duties as required.
Basic Qualifications
College background and two or more years related research experience.  Applicant should have proficiency in using statistical software packages such as STATA.  Higher education may count towards experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Master's Degree in Epidemiology
  • Experience with data collection and data management in a research setting
  • Experience programming in R and/or STATA and ability to perform data analyses as required
  • Experience working with complex data sets, creating visualizations, and using statistical inference techniques
  • Experience in writing and submitting manuscripts for publication
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Works well independently as well as cooperatively within a team
Additional Information
This is a one-year term position from the date of hire, with the possibility of extension, contingent upon work performance and continued funding to support the position.
