Our Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) is Australia's largest single astronomy institution and conducts 90 per cent of Australian radio astronomy research. It is used to investigate a broad range of subjects – from the evolution of galaxies, magnetic fields and black holes to using pulsars, rapidly spinning neutron stars, to look for gravitational waves.
As part of the Radio Space Situational Awareness (SSA) project team, this role will contribute to developing software for SSA data processing from radio astronomy instruments. The radio SSA project team are developing operational SSA modes for a selection of ATNF instruments.
As the Space Data Scientist, your role will involve algorithm development on a software defined radio platform for reception, calibration and processing data received on radio telescopes for SSA.
Your duties will include:
- Software development in python for array-based methods including:
- Interferometry
- Beamforming
- Calibration
- Relevant signal processing and data cleaning methods.
- Proposing and conducting experiments with array-based and single dish radio-telescopes.
- Familiarity with relevant radio-astronomy binary data storage formats.
- Communicating and documenting approaches to broader team members.
- Under limited supervision, designing and performing straightforward experiments and routine laboratory analyses, designing new processes or apparatus by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertaking modifications to methods requiring some innovation.
- Conducting literature reviews, investigations and inspections in the field or laboratory including associated analysis possibly involving statistical or graphics software.
- Developing, testing and modifying new software applications as required.
- Working with discretion to decide on the timing of operations within the work team’s plan and plan ahead to meet experimental and/or project demands.
- Independently testing possible solutions to resolve identified problems.
- Responding courteously and efficiently to client requests, maintaining clear communication regarding mutual expectations and monitoring client satisfaction.
- Other duties as required.

Salary: AU$70,874 - AU$90,202 per annum plus up to 15.4% superannuation

To be considered you will need:
Essential
- Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in science, mathematics or engineering.
- At least 12 months demonstrated experience in software development for software defined radios.
- An understanding of the concepts on interferometry.
Desirable
- An understanding of radio astronomy.
- Understanding of or previous experience in space situational awareness.
- Understanding direction of arrival determination methods.
- Experience in dealing with real data with noise and system artifacts.
