Caregivers at the Sleep Disorder Center provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of sleep and wake disorders such as sleep apnea, insomnia, and restless leg syndrome. Our collaborative team approach includes sleep specialists, pulmonologists, ear-nose-throat specialists, and psychologists or psychiatrists who utilize various treatment options to help patients return to restful sleep. As a Sleep Technician Trainee, you will receive training and gain the basic concept to perform polysomnographic testing.


The ideal future caregiver is someone who:

  • Has at least six months of direct patient care experience.

  • Is preferably enrolled in an accredited educational program leading either to an associate's degree or certificate with an emphasis on polysomnography.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepares patients and equipment for ordered testing.
  • Interviews patient to determine sleep disorder issues and to explain testing procedures.
  • Performs and documents testing.
  • Monitors patient throughout testing and intervenes as necessary to resolve patient needs or equipment issues.
  • Scores, interprets and reports results of sleep studies.
  • Prepares, calibrates, repairs and maintains equipment required for testing.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current enrollment in an accredited educational program leading either to an Associate's degree or certificate with an emphasis on polysomnography preferred.

Certifications:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider.

Competencies (Complexity of Work):

  • Requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum six months’ direct patient care experience.
  • One-year healthcare-related post-secondary education may substitute for stated experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Requires full range of body motion including standing and walking for extended periods of time; must lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to assist with positioning and transporting patients.
  • Requires the ability to maneuver equipment and motor coordination to operate equipment.
  • Requires normal or corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
  • Manual and finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
  • Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases and body fluids.

  • Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
