What Your Job Will Be Like:

Organization 05350, NW Arming & Fuzing Systems, is currently seeking a Manager, R&D Science and Engineering, for the W80-4 Warhead Controller Department, 05357. This department is responsible for the design, development, and support of arming and fuzing controllers, with a primary focus on the W80-4 Warhead. This department requires a significant amount of collaboration. It provides and receives support to other Arming and Fuzing deliverables that are not directly related to their primary W80-4 commitments. They also partner across the laboratories and Nuclear Weapon Enterprise to meet their objectives.

The selected candidate will work as part of a team of 05350 managers that are focused on the Nuclear Deterrence (ND) Arming and Fuzing business area currently supporting multiple programs. They will lead their respective teams in the delivery of the current Weapon Control Unit and help shape the future for advanced controllers. Additional expected responsibilities include the formation and execution of strategic roadmaps for 05350 as well as influencing strategic planning in the greater ND community. Successful candidates will be able to strategically partner and engage with internal and external customers for successful project execution. They will demonstrate the ability to work in a dynamic teaming environment, sharing resources as well programmatic responsibilities.

On any given day, one may be called upon to:

  • Guide the work of the department and staff
  • Build and strengthen the team to include hiring, professional development, and performance management
  • Lead department-level planning and communication to customers and partners
  • Understand the work of the organization and connect the work and expertise of staff with potential beneficiaries, collaborators, and customers
  • Build trust-based relationships to ensure that customer needs are met
  • Apply organization knowledge and experience to independently judge work quality, performance, and alignment of results with customer expectations
  • Provide oversight and guidance on the security for work within the department
  • Ensure safe operations of department staff
  • Engage technically across the department to understand and represent the work
  • Partner with other 5350 management to ensure successful delivery of all our work and ensure strategic direction is being set holistically across the group
  • Some travel will be required for this position

Salary Range:

$157,100 - $267,000

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and eight (8) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • You must have an active US DOE Q or DoD TS security clearance to start.

Qualifications We Desire:

The ideal R&D Manager candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • A graduate degree in science or engineering (MS or Ph.D.).
  • Two or more years of demonstrated leadership experience.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills in developing trusting relationships with peers, staff, management, customers, and stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the development and delivery of presentations, proposals, reports and documentation.
  • Active SCI clearance.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience with ND components: design, development and/or qualification
  • Experience in the development of new electronic products
  • The demonstrated ability to attract, engage, and develop staff, and manage change
  • Experience in integrating new technology into electronic products
  • Working knowledge of current Nuclear Deterrence strategic direction
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective partnerships and relationships
  • Design experience in embedded design, electronics, controllers, radiation hardened electronics, or ASIC design
  • A commitment to safe and secure operations
  • Experience in partnering with KCNSC as a production partner
  • Leadership experience as a Level 1 manager
  • A desire to help set group strategic direction
  • At least least 2 years within the ND enterprise
  • The ability to occasionally travel.

About Our Team:

The W80-4 Warhead Controller Department, 05357, is responsible for the design, development, and support of arming and fuzing subsystems controllers primarily for the W80-4. The department is currently focused on completing development and qualification of the Warhead Control Unit (WCU). The expertise of the team is also utilized for other weapon components within the group. The department is responsible for coordinating, leveraging and managing the controller development, qualification and eventual sustainment efforts. Essential capabilities include controller design and analysis, radiation hardened electronics design, technology evaluation, subsystem design, test development, product realization and qualification.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications.
