Organization's Summary Statement:
The University of Maryland's Applied Research Lab for Intelligence and Security (ARLIS) is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Systems Engineer to support cutting-edge research projects. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cloud computing, particularly with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure, as well as a solid understanding of high-performance computing (HPC) environments and containerization technologies. This role is pivotal in enabling researchers to efficiently and securely conduct their work in a state-of-the-art technological environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITES:
•Design and Maintain Enterprise Systems – Apply proven systems engineering expertise to develop, optimize, and maintain enterprise-level infrastructure.
•Manage Linux Environments – Oversee Linux administration, including scripting and automation, to ensure system efficiency and reliability.
•Implement and Support Infrastructure – Deploy and manage virtualization, cloud solutions, and high-performance computing (HPC) environments to support organizational needs.
•Enhance Security and Incident Response – Monitor security threats, implement proactive defenses, and respond effectively to incidents.
•Collaborate and Problem-Solve – Work closely with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot complex technical challenges and drive solutions.
•Communicate Across Teams – Effectively convey technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, ensuring alignment and understanding.

Must be able to obtain a U.S. security clearance. If selected, you must meet the requirements for access to classified information and will be subject to a government security clearance investigation that includes criminal and credit history checks, as well as verification of U.S. citizenship, birth, education, employment, and military history.

Physical Demands:
Sedentary work performed in a normal office environment; exerts up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Ability to attend meetings both on and off campus. Spending long hours in front of a computer screen. Must be able to be in the office 5 days a week

Preferences:
• Prior experience with modern IT systems and architectures (e.g., cloud platforms, virtualization, containerization)
• Familiarity with automation and infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Ansible, Terraform)
• Demonstrated knowledge of enterprise‑grade network and security technologies
• Experience working in higher education or public-sector IT environments

Licenses/ Certifications: NA
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Five (5) years professional experience designing or installing audio visual systems.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of the application of design methodologies.
Knowledge of full AV system scopes of work and associated documentation.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Google Office Suite.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
