Job Description

Position Summary:

The Physical Therapy Aide is responsible for assisting the Rehabilitation staff with transport, clinic maintenance, managing supplies, retrieving and adjusting wheelchairs, storing and managing equipment and assisting with treatments as directed by the Rehab staff. The incumbent will also be responsible for ambulating residents on multiple units that have been cleared by Rehab staff for an ambulation program.



Duties of a Hospital Physical Therapy Aid may include the following but are not limited to:

Assists Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists and/or Physical Therapy Assistants with treatment of patients as necessary.
Identifies changes in status of a resident prior to or during treatment and reports that change immediately to the appropriate staff for evaluation.
Assists with maintenance range of motion exercises and exercises to maintain strength and endurance in residents without related pathology.
Ambulates residents who are on a maintenance physical therapy program.
Provides superficial hot and cold applications.
Sets up for each resident's therapy; keeps treatment area, equipment and supplies clean and organized.
Orders depleted supplies.
Transports residents safely to and from physical therapy.
Keeps equipment closet in order.
Changes beds and stacks linens, as needed.
Cleans and disinfects beds and equipment as required.
Issues and provides minor repair of wheelchairs and devices.
Performs nursing ambulation, range of motion, feeding, toileting, transfers and/or other ADL as needed to supplement the nursing rehab process.
Provides feedback to the Therapy Department if any problems or changes in status are noted.
Performs clerical duties as required such as answering the phone, billing and filing, filling out insurance forms and other paperwork. Inputs data into computer as necessary.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
Current New York State Certified Nursing Assistant certification. Two years' of experience in direct patient care. Related education beyond high school level may be substituted on a year for year basis.

Legitimate Operating Business Needs:
Direct patient care experience in a skilled nursing facility.

Working Conditions:

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries.

Prior to start date, the selected candidate must meet the following requirements:

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation.
Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department.
Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
Provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s).

Essential Position: This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. This means that when the Long Island State Veterans Home is faced with an emergency, employees in such positions are required to remain at their work location or to report to work.
The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.
This position may require the wearing of respiratory protection, which may prohibit the wearing of facial hair.
