What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a highly motivated E&O Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team. Our department is responsible for embedded electronics, electrical and RF technologies from design to production and mission deployment for a wide variety of national security missions in the Transportation Safety and Security Programs (TSSP). The ideal candidate possesses a strong background in engineering principles, including prototyping, troubleshooting, implementation, production and sustainment. You will be a part of team that designs, builds, tests, and integrates in a challenging fast-paced high-consequence environment. On any given day, you may be called upon to:

  • Apply your knowledge in electrical drawings, schematics, requirements and specifications to Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues and manage risks that may impact safeguard and secure transportation mission operations, ensuring timely and effective problem resolution.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts to analyze problems, develop targeted solutions, and support implementation of corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Support troubleshooting and validation efforts at vehicle maintenance facilities and production sites by diagnosing system malfunctions and assisting in resolution.
  • Document changes, modifications, and updates to systems or processes, and issue special engineering instructions.
  • Apply a structured engineering approach to understand electrical modules and system interactions, support integration tests, and contribute to system-level performance assessments.
  • Provide technical input and feedback to technical reviews to identify potential issues and improve system design.
  • Participate in emergency response activities related to safeguard and secure transportation programs (TSSP), assisting in rapid diagnosis and corrective actions to restore operations.
  • Interface with NNSA Office of Secure Transportation sponsors, customers, and internal teams to ensure alignment with mission objectives.

Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant must work onsite.

Salary Range:

$102,400 - $199,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require:

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Hands-on experience troubleshooting and debugging embedded electronic modules and systems across prototype, qualification, production, and operational phases for secure transportation.
  • Experience with emergency response environments, such as transportation emergency response or emergency operation centers, including participation in 24x7 response team
  • Active DOE Q-level (or equivalent) security clearance.

Qualifications We Desire:

  • Experience working with R&D Staff in the development of new capabilities and technologies to ensure operational success.
  • Strong knowledge of embedded hardware and firmware integration with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex technical issues efficiently.
  • Practical proficiency in secure (classified or UCNI) electronics control, handling and testing at system, module, and board levels.
  • Skilled in documenting technical findings, test results, and troubleshooting procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.
  • Experience supporting production agencies and responding to customer trouble calls, providing timely and effective technical assistance.
  • Proficient in emergency response environments, such as transportation emergency response or emergency operation centers, including participation in 24x7 response teams; or demonstrated ability to perform effectively under pressure and adapt quickly to rapidly changing situations during emergency events.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders at various authority levels to ensure understanding stakeholder requirements and translating them into actionable technical solutions.

About Our Team:

The Communications and Electrical Systems Technology Department is responsible for the development and integration of command, control, and communication technologies used in specialized transportation security systems. The department conducts research and development activities in the areas of high consequence software systems, custom embedded circuit design, wireless network communications, intelligent power conditioning and distribution, navigation systems, and sensors. Major programs supported by the department include the Safeguards Transporter (SGT), development of a new high security system called the Mobile Guardian Transporter (MGT) and an advanced concept surety programs called Integrated Surety Architectures (ISA). Robust security protection for transportation systems face many unique challenges, and requires exhaustive investigation and analysis of sophisticated system attacks and the associated development of countermeasures to defend and protect against such attacks. The use of modeling and simulation tools assists in the investigation, exploration, and development of new design approaches, algorithms, and design of experiments to validate system capabilities.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
