Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Manager, Biological and Laboratory Safety Manager, the Specialist, Safety is responsible for providing technical guidance, training and risk assessment of the City of Hope enterprise-wide biological and laboratory safety programs according to federal, state, local and institutional guidelines. This position provides support to safety within enterprise-wide clinical and research areas to ensure that institutional policies, procedures, and safety are maintained.

As a successful candidate, you will:

  • Assists in the development, review, and implementation of safety policies and programs that meet City of Hope institutional, regulatory, and general safety requirements.
  • Conducts periodic inspections, training, and compliance review to ensure safety standards and equipment are maintained and operations occur in a safe manner. Monitors exposure and contamination control policies and procedures, as well as maintains all records as it relates to biological, chemical, and industrial hygiene.
  • Monitors the safe disposal practices and procedures for hazardous wastes for the City of Hope and for off campus facilities. Participates in regulatory inspections, as needed, for all locations.
  • Monitors the safety practices, implements, and maintains safety policies for use of hazardous materials, recombinant DNA and/or infectious agents: Assists with risk assessment, review, and related activities for research registered under the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Ensures that all personnel are trained and that any significant incidents or accident are reported to the appropriate regulatory committees and the Manager, Biological and Laboratory Safety.

Your qualifications should include:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene, biology, chemistry, or other related science
  • Two years of experience in general Environmental Health & Safety, clinical or biological safety, industrial hygiene, preferably with laboratory research experience

Salary / Pay Rate Information:
Pay Rate: $34.64 - $53.70 / hour

The estimated pay scale represents the typical [salary/hourly] range City of Hope reasonably expects to pay for this position, with offers determined based on several factors which may include, but not be limited to, the candidate’s experience, expertise, skills, education, job scope, training, internal equity, geography/market, etc. This pay scale is subject to change from time to time.
